Mid-Sized Cities Mayors’ Caucus Concludes Sylvan Lake Meetings with Successful Government of Alberta Roundtable

May 28, 2025

Sylvan Lake, Alberta — Last week, the 24 municipalities in Alberta’s Mid-Sized Cities Mayors’ Caucus (MCMC) met in Sylvan Lake to continue their work identifying best practices, collaborating on innovative solutions to growth pressures, and strengthening relationships.

Alberta’s mid-sized cities face record growth and must navigate challenges in affordability, global instability, and heightened demand for community infrastructure. That’s why priority is placed on meeting in person with peers and members of the Government of Alberta to collaborate on shared solutions.

The mayors came together to discuss challenges and learn from industry experts through workshops on economics, infrastructure, and community planning, as well as a roundtable with Government of Alberta partners.

“Alberta’s mid-sized cities are unique, and there is much we can learn from each other from these in-person sessions,” explained MCMC Chair and Mayor of Cochrane, Jeff Genung. “These meetings in Sylvan Lake proved that, especially during our provincial roundtable, where we heard from Premier Smith and Minister Williams, strong municipalities are the key to building a strong Alberta.”

In the afternoon roundtable with Premier Danielle Smith, Minister of Municipal Affairs, Dan Williams, Minister of Transportation and Economic Corridors, Devin Dreeshen, Parliamentary Secretary of Economic Corridor Development, Shane Getson, Parliamentary Secretary of Indigenous and Rural Policing, Nolan Dyck, MLA and MCMC MLA Caucus Chair Brandon Lunty, and MLA Jennifer Johnson, MCMC members talked about collaboration, identifying cost saving measures, and how mid-sized cities can partner with the provincial government to ensure all Albertans have access to a high quality of life.

MCMC was also joined by experts from the Business Council of Alberta, Brownlee LLP, ATCO, and EY to identify ways to unlock new opportunities and build prosperous communities across the province.

“It was great welcoming Alberta’s mid-sized cities to Sylvan Lake for two days of learning and conversation,” said Mayor of Sylvan Lake, Megan Hanson. “While we’re one of the smaller members in the Caucus, we were proud to show off what Sylvan Lake offers its residents and businesses through smart, strategic policy and investments.”

To make this gathering possible, MCMC was proud to be sponsored by McElhanney, Stantec, Alberta Municipalities, Brownlee LLP, ATCO, Border Paving, and EY.
